AM AND LOCAL COUNCILLOR CALL FOR A40 PEDESTRIAN CROSSING
NATIONAL Assembly Member for Monmouth, Nick Ramsay, has this week written to the Assembly Minister for Transport, Ieuan Wyn Jones AM, to request that a new pedestrian crossing is placed over the A40, between the Ysbyty Fields Estate and the Plas Derwen Estate, Abergavenny.
Local AM Nick visited the site this weekend with local Castle Ward County Councillor, Mrs Maureen Powell.
Nick and County Councillor Powell were most concerned to note that where the pedestrian exit of the Ysbyty Fields Estate meets the A40, the pavement on that side of the road finishes. This means that anyone needing to walk into Abergavenny, or to the Railway Station, has to cross a busy trunk road to reach the pavement.
Speaking today Nick said: "In both mine and Cllr Powell's opinion there is a pressing need for a pedestrian crossing to be placed on this part of the A40.
"There are around 140 houses in the Ysbyty Fields Estate and local children attending King Henry VIII School, at present, have to cross a dangerously busy trunk road to get to school.
"Furthermore, anyone wanting to catch a bus to Newport, Cardiff or Monmouth also has to navigate this route.
"As this is a trunk road it is the responsibility of the Welsh Assembly Government. I have therefore asked the Assembly Minister for Transport to consider funding a new pedestrian crossing."
