Monmouth RFC
Deserved recognition abounded at the recent Monmouth RFC awards evening and the occasion was made even more special by the presence of Town Mayor as the guest of honour.
Following a mixed season when the 1st XV alternated frustratingly between stylish play and a seeming suicidal desire to dive out of their league saved by a gritty last few performances when it really counted saw the top awards being made to Dave Morgan as their Player of the Year, with Mike Griffiths winning the accolade of Players' Player and matt King being the Most Improved Player.
The Druids displayed great strength of depth in their season, coming a close second in their league and as losing semi-finalist in the Cup and Greg Wilding shone consistently to win the Player of the Year title whilst Kiwi Dion Hurinui was the Druids' players choice. Sam Harding was the person chosen as the one who had improved most.
A major success for the Club this year is the presence of a Youth team who survived some batterings from more practised and larger boys but by the end of a season guided by Dave Price, John Frost and Paul Ward they were starting to win matches and well. Everyone agreed their star player was Chris Reed with Jack Bicknall being the greatest improvement.
The Tour to New Jersey deservedly received a very big mention from Chairman Mel Wheeler given the splendid organisation of Jim, Spud and Jock, excellent ‘whitewash' results and great ambassadorial behaviour in Monmouth County, foreshadowing the following ‘tour' awards: Stacey Edwards was the Player of the Tour whilst Huw Adams gained the accolade of ‘Top Tourist'.
Highlight of the evening though was the richly deserved award to Dave Price of Clubman of the Year.
The evening concluded for partners and players alike with a Disco but already the players were having to think hard about next season because training starts next Tuesday the 1st July on Chippenham at 7p.m. when all old (surely we mean ‘existing'?) and new players will be made most welcome by Coach Ian Seymour to his attempts to provide a storming start to the year.
