The Gatehouse Public House & Restaurant

The Gate House is known to have been in existence in the 1600s, although an inn is believed to have occupied this site in the shadow of the Monnow Bridge since mediaeval times.

The property comprised a malthouse, orchard, stables and had river-landing rights. Records from the late 1600s show that the estate was mortgaged for £550, a considerable sum for those times.

In the 1800s The Gate House hosted the weekly meetings of the Monmouth Female Friendly Society as well as ceremonies for the Monmouthshire Order of Druids.

In addition to this, banquets were held on a regular basis for prominent local dignitaries and other important town and county societies.

Today, The Gate House is family run and a friendly atmosphere greets all those who visit us. We welcome children but ask only that they keep their parents under control!

Morning coffee, light meals and lunchtime specials are served in the main bar and our Alcove Restaurant, adjacent to the main bar, is smoke free and open for lunch and dinner every day.

For larger parties the function room & restaurant is available on a pre-booked basis and can accommodate up to 65 seated guests.

The Gate House offers a unique and varied country menu and all dishes are freshly prepared using local produce as much as is possible.

We have a well stocked cellar and offer a full range of single malt whiskies, as well as a full compliment of real ales, premium lagers and popular brand beverages..... all at friendly pub prices!

Good, home-cooked food at friendly prices...Rump, sirloin and fillet steaks cooked to your liking.

Tuna with cracked black pepper & brandy cream sauce - Grilled Trout stuffed with apricots & prawns - Lamb Shank in a mint glaze, with red wine & onion gravy - Medallions of pork in a cider-apple cream sauce - Venison cutlet in oyster mushroom & brandy sauce (seasonal) - Pan-fried Duck breast in orange & ginger or mixed cherry sauce - Salmon fillet in white wine, prawn & cream sauce - Seared Tuna in a Pernod cream sauce.

As far as is possible, and depending what is in season, we use as much local produce in our

menu as we can.

Events and Functions at The Gatehouse...Our upstairs function room has a seating capacity of 65 and it's own bar and is bookable in advance by contacting either Phil or Judi. It's regularly used for birthday parties, anniversaries, company dinners and provides a comfortably exclusive atmosphere away from the main body of the pub.

Several very good local bands have played at numerous functions in the past and can be booked for your event via us.

Some of our regular and forthcoming events...Every Thursday we have our Fun Pub Quiz: starts at 8.30pm, has amusing selection of spot prizes but the winner gets £20 worth of beer credits for use in the bar.

Light-hearted fun, this is a pub quiz that doesn't try to take itself too seriously.
