CUT WASTE,
NOT DISABLED SERVICES SAYS AM
MONMOUTH
AM Nick Ramsay has today spoken of his concern on hearing that a local charity,
Advocacy Action Wales, a specialist advocacy service for people with learning
disabilities who have complex needs or communication difficulties, is to close
after nearly 25 years.
Last year Nick lent his support
to the charity, who were seeking match funding to enable their grant funding
from the Welsh Assembly.
However, it has now been
announced that the specialist service, which runs from Mamahilad Park Estate,
will no longer exist after April 30th 2010.
On hearing the news, Nick said: "This
is a concerning development, Advocacy Action Wales have, for many years, provided a valuable service
to some of society's most vulnerable people, including many of my Monmouthshire
constituents.
"Last year I wrote to Edwina Hart
AM, the Minister for Health and Social Services at the National Assembly for
Wales, to request that the charity was granted additional time to resolve any
funding problems.
"Whilst I accept that money is
tight, if this closure is due to any cuts in funding from the Welsh Assembly
Government, it would be a lamentable decision. When will
they learn, we need cuts in waste not cuts in frontline services.
"Advocacy Action Wales
should be proud of it achievements; it has provided a strong voice for many
people in my constituency and beyond. I will certainly be raising my concerns
with the Welsh Assembly Government."
