AM PRAISES LIFE OF USK-BORN ICON

National Assembly Member for Monmouth, Nick Ramsay, has called for greater publicity for the life and work of the late Alfred Russel Wallace, who was born near Usk in 1823, and was co-originator of the theory of evolution by natural selection with Charles Darwin.

Wallace and Darwin had independently been developing the same theory, and extracts from the work of both men were presented in a paper to the Linnean Society in 1858. Although history has given credit to Darwin for the theory of Natural Selection, contemporaries were well aware of Wallace's important work in this field.

Speaking today Nick said: "We are currently hearing a great deal in the media about the work of Darwin.

"Many people are unaware that if Darwin had failed to return from his voyage on the Beagle, we would now be celebrating the life of Wallace, born in Usk, Monmouthshire in 1823.

"History has credited Darwin as the sole originator of the theory. Sadly, the importance of the Welshman, Wallace, has been largely overlooked and overshadowed by Darwin. In my view this is a great shame."
