MP OPPOSED TO VALUATION TRIBUNALS REORGANISATION
MONMOUTH MP David Davies has voiced his opposition to proposals to restructure valuation tribunals in Wales.
The Welsh Assembly Government is currently consulting on plans to establish a single Valuation Tribunal for Wales, replacing the current structure of four independent tribunals (east, north, south and west Wales). It will be headed up by a national president.
Valuation tribunals hear appeals on local taxation matters, including appeals against council tax valuation and non-domestic rating.
"Having read the consultation paper, I cannot see anything in favour of establishing a single Valuation Tribunal for Wales," said Mr Davies.
"There is nothing to suggest there will even be any long-term cost or efficiency savings.
"I feel very strongly that the current status quo should remain. I attended a valuation tribunal several years ago where I gave my support to an appellant and I considered it to be a worthwhile experience.
"I do not believe the creation of a single Valuation Tribunal for Wales would meet the needs of the public. Indeed, I'm concerned it would further remove the service from the public. The loss of a local identity will, I
believe, damage the perception of justice being independently delivered on a local basis.
"I have written to the Minister for Social Justice & Local Government asking him to set out the Assembly's reasons for the merger and to confirm these proposals are not simply a cost saving measure."
