Young carers' cash boost
9th September 2009
Young carers in Monmouthshire will have
more support thanks to a donation of £3000 given to the Crossroads SE Wales
Young Carers Project (Monmouthshire) this week.
The money was given to the charity by
Monmouthshire County Council's former Chairman, Councillor Susan White, as a
result of the fundraising she did last year.
Crossroads SE Wales Young Carers Project
(Monmouthshire) was one of Councillor White's chosen charities during her time
as Chairman.
Councillor White said:
"I chose the Young Carers Project as
one of my charities because of the great work they do to support young people
from 8 - 18 who have a responsibility for looking after a relative or are
affected by someone else's needs.
"I'm pleased to
be able to help them in the work they do for young carers.
"Young carers
perform substantial caring tasks and have a level of responsibility which would
usually be associated with an adult. A helping hand or supportive voice
can often make a world of difference to a young carer."
Katherine Lewis, from Crossroads SE Wales,
picked up the cheque:
"We aim to give
them as much help as they need and provide social activities that give them the
opportunity to relax and be young people.
"Young carers
really benefit from social activities where they can share their experiences
with people who understand the pressures they face and gain comfort from each
other.
"This money will make a great contribution
to lives of our young carers in Monmouthshire.
"Some will go towards maintaining the
funding for our Monmouthshire School Liaison Officer. Some will go
towards holiday activities like the trip planned for October where the carers
will stay in a youth hostel and go bowling and visit Oakwood theme park.
"I'd
like to thank Councillor White for her hard work and dedication to the charity,
the money will make a real difference to people's lives.
