Recycling
has increased says MCC
Monmouthshire's Cabinet
Member for waste responded to critics of the new recycling scheme in the county
this week, saying that recycling has increased since its introduction.
Monmouthshire County
Councillor Eric Saxon, said:
"Residents have proved great
supporters by increasing the amounts of recycling through the new scheme and we
would like to say a very big thank you for that support - well done."
The new red and purple bag
recycling scheme has already increased recycling by over 30%, an extra 30
tonnes of recycled materials that won't go to landfill this week.
In the first week, the new
scheme has collected a total of 131 tonnes of recyclables with only part of the
county yet covered.
Councillor Saxon continued:
"The red bag is for paper and
thin card and the purple bag is for cans, bottles, jars, tins, plastics. Paper
for the red bag includes: office paper; newspaper; magazines; thin card; junk
mail; envelopes; catalogues; and phone directories.
"Don't worry if some paper
has gone into the purple sacks, it will still be sorted at the recycling
facility by going through more processes and will not be going to landfill.
"Changes of collection day
with the new red and purple bag recycling scheme are inevitable and we realise
this causes inconvenience. However, we are endeavouring to keep this to a
minimum. Each individual household will be advised of any changes."
The new red and purple bag
recycling scheme will be extended to the remaining box collection areas from
the week beginning 25th January 2010. Leaflets and bags will be
delivered in the two weeks before that start date so every household will have
its bags, leaflet and collection day before it starts.
From April 2010 the council
will also be extending the scheme to even more households to reach as many
households in Monmouthshire as possible.
Councillor Saxon said:
"Thanks once
again to all residents for helping us to achieve a great result and remember -
we need you to recycle. It's your waste don't throw it away."
