Monmouthshire pupils go green competing in Yellow Pages recycling scheme
Pupils across Monmouthshire will show off their green credentials over the next three weeks as they take part in a competition that aims to recycle as many old Yellow Pages directories as possible.
The Yellow Woods Challenge is a simple, educational and fun environmental campaign for schools, run by Yellow Pages working in partnership with the Woodland Trust and Monmouthshire Council. This challenge has been running locally for six years and has been very successful.
Competing schools receive free educational packs to teach children all about the environment and they will be hoping to win one of the big cash prizes on offer. Yellow Pages will award a total of £600 to schools that recycle the highest number of old Yellow Pages directories per pupil plus two £50 bonus prizes.
Goytre Fawr Primary School are keen to get involved and have Eco Representatives from each year who work hard on environmental issues. The Eco Reps said:
"We have a bronze and silver award for working as an eco-school and we are hoping that taking part in the
Yellow Woods competition will help us get the top Green Flag award."
Lisa Roberts, Recycling Officer at Monmouthshire Council, said: "When your new Yellow Pages directory is delivered, please give your old copy to a child at a participating school. It will help to reinforce what pupils are learning about the environment and will keep a useful resource out of landfill."
"Also, for every pound they
give to schools, Yellow Pages will donate a matching pound to the Woodland
Trust to help plant native trees, which makes this another good reason to get
behind the campaign."
This year, for the first
time, residents can now recycle Yellow Pages at many of the recycling
points throughout the county. You can also put them in your kerbside
'recycling box'.
The
Monmouthshire Yellow Woods Challenge runs from 8th December 2008
until 6th February, 2009. For more details, visit
