Monmouthshire County
Council Scores Major Environmental Award
Monmouthshire County Council has won a prestigious Gold Green Apple
Award. It was presented at the House of Commons in London on the 17th November. The
Council has won the top award for Councils in Wales for its Wentwood Timber
Centre. The centre processes local
hardwood timbers for supply into local businesses. The Green Apple Awards are
presented annually in recognition of companies, councils and communities
carrying out projects that enhance the environment.
Cllr Bob Greenland, Deputy Leader of
Monmouthshire County Council accepted the award. He said:
"I am very pleased to accept this award on behalf
of the Council. It is good to see that all the efforts of the staff involved
with the backing of the Council have been recognised at such a high level.
Wentwood Timber Centre is a great example of the Council addressing true
sustainability issues and encouraging the procurement of local products."
Wentwood Timber Centre is located in the
heart of the Wentwood forest in Monmouthshire. Timber purchased from local
woodlands is converted into stock sizes by contract saw millers. It is then air
dried in drying sheds on site for a minimum of 6 months prior to kiln drying.
Material is sold out to a variety of local manufacturers and individuals who
make flooring, furniture and a range of timber products. The wood stocked
reflects the standing crop of timber in the local area - Oak, Beech, Ash,
Alder, Lime, Chestnut, Birch and Sycamore.
This is not Monmouthshire's only
recent success. In just one week we also won a commendation in the Building of
the Year award in Wales for Llanfoist Fawr Primary School
and the Integration and Collaborative Working award in the UK Constructing
Excellence awards for the work we have done with Willmott Dixon to deliver new
schools in Monmouthshire. And we also won the Bronze Medal for "Food Tourism
Destination" at Wales
the True Taste Food and Drink Awards.
