Monmouth residents given chance to
discover their town
A new project is giving Monmouth
residents a chance to learn the rich history of their town and share their
stories with others.
Museums Officer for Monmouthshire
County Council (MCC), Andrew Helme explained:
"'Our Town' is a project aimed at
people who have recently moved to Monmouth and want to know more about where
you live and for those who know a lot about the town and would you like to
share what they know with others.
"With the help of grant funding from
the Welsh Assembly through CYMAL, we will create a travelling exhibition
exploring the local history of the town, and we have resources to inspire local
residents to go out and about and discover Monmouth in new and exciting
ways. There will also be a series of
walks and tours that uncover the fascinating history of the town and its
people."
Monmouth Museum will work in partnership with a
range of local organisations including Monmouthshire Adult and Community
Learning, Monmouth Archaeology, Gwent Wildlife Trust and the Local History
Society, but it also wants to involve new and long-term residents of the
town.
MCC's cabinet member for culture,
Liz Hacket Pain, said:
"This is an exciting local project
for Monmouth.The wonderful work the
museum does extends way beyond the museum itself."
Project co-ordinator Karin Molson
said:
"This is a really exciting project
for Monmouth Museum as we will have the opportunity
to work with people from across the town to develop resources and activities
that everyone will be able to share.
"We're particularly keen to help new
residents to discover what a fascinating town they now live in. Longer term
residents will be able to share their knowledge of the town and its people, or
if they have never been able to get involved with the town's heritage before,
this is the opportunity.
"This is a great ‘hands -on' chance
for people to get behind the scenes of the museum and find out how exhibitions,
walks and tours and family resources are created.People do not need to have any experience,
just enthusiasm, and a couple of hours a week to spare between October and
January.
"There are lots of different things
to do from selecting objects for an exhibition, working with our partners to
design activities for families, researching different areas of Monmouth's
history and designing new walks and tours that explore the fascinating heritage
of Monmouth, past and present".
The ‘Our Town' project begins on
Saturday 18th October with a free museum open day.
Andrew Helme said:
"Visitors to the museum will be able
to find out more about their local area using the museum's local history
resources.Who knows, you may even be
able to find out who lived in your house or street in the past."
A family treasure hunt,
storytelling, children's art and craft activities, displays and handling
material by Monmouth Archaeology, local history tours, and a mystery object
competition will also be available.
