Foodie short breaks in
Monmouthshire on the menu
5th March, 2009
Foodies who want a taste of what
Monmouthshire can offer can find out the best places to visit in a new leaflet
full of foodie breaks.
Local tourism operators, from restaurants
and pubs to hotels and B&Bs, offer visitors a mouth-watering range of food
experiences and this new publication draws together some of the best from
across the region.
The publication has been produced by
Monmouthshire County Council's Tourism section and is part of their campaign to
promote the outstanding quality of Monmouthshire's food and drink, coming hot
on the heels of the best ‘Food Tourism Destination' award presented to the
county at the 2008 True Taste Wales Food & Drink Awards.
Short break ideas featured in the new guide
include staying at award-winning restaurant, The Foxhunter at Nantyderry, and
foraging for wild foods with a local expert before heading back to a
three-course lunch made from the morning's finds. Another break features visits
to food and drink producers in Tintern including Parva Farm Vineyard and
Kingstone Brewery, with the opportunity for visitors to get actively involved
in bread-making and brewing, as well as enjoying the beauty and natural
amenities of the Wye Valley.
Other breaks feature some of the best dining
to be found locally and more hands-on cookery skills, or the chance to stay in
a country manor where all meals can be provided hot to the table. The leaflet
also includes a prize draw to win tickets to this year's Abergavenny Food
Festival.
Mark Jones, Tourism Marketing Officer at
Monmouthshire County Council, said:
"There are so many local producers providing
really outstanding produce to local hospitality businesses and this new leaflet
is one way to get the message across to our visitors that Monmouthshire is the
top food destination in Wales.
"The short breaks featured offer many
different foodie experiences but all are designed to get visitors thinking
about locally sourced foods and the provenance of what appears on their plate."
Copies
of the leaflet were available at the True Taste Wales Welsh Produce Market held
in London on 27th February, held to celebrate the best of Welsh cuisine, and
will also be used to aid the promotion of Monmouthshire during the forthcoming
twinning visit being made by Abergavenny Town Council to its French twin town
of Beaupreau. The leaflet can also be downloaded from the Council's visitor
website, www.visitwyevalley.com or
picked up from local tourist information centres.
