Dont fall for council tax scam says Trading Standards
People in Monmouthshire are being warned
about a scam where people are persuaded to give away their bank details after
being told they are due a council tax refund.
Monmouthshire County Council's Council is
warning residents about phone calls from people claiming they represent the
council.
Phil Glanville, Monmouthshire County Council's Head of Trading Standards, said:
"Our Council Tax department received an
enquiry from a gentleman who was called by someone who said he had
been selected for a reduction in the council tax banding on his house
and as a consequence was due a refund in the region of £3500.00. All
he had to do was provide his bank details so that the refund could be
processed.
"Fortunately, the gentleman was suspicious
of this apparent good fortune and checked it out with our council tax
office.
"This is a scam and council tax payers
should be aware that they must never divulge their bank details over the
phone in this way.
"Council tax payers are formally advised by
letter from the council if any refund is due.
"We are aware of similar scams and people
should be sceptical of any promise of a cash windfall that sounds too good
to be true.
"If anyone is approached in this way they
should report it to the local Trading Standards Office. Monmouthshire
County Council's Trading Standards can be reached on 01633 64102."
