Businesses get payment in loo
People who need the toilet while they are out and about in Monmouthshire will soon have more facilities thanks to a new scheme that encourages businesses to open their toilets to the public.
Up to 35 businesses in Monmouthshire will get a grant of up to £500 from Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) to allow
everyone to use their toilet facilities.
The Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) have
given MCC up to £17,500 to work with local businesses to make sure people have
access to safe, hygienic and accessible toilet facilities.
Roger Hoggins, MCC's Head
of Operations, said:
"Everyone should have access to clean and
accessible public toilets. This scheme should be particularly helpful for
older people, those with disabilities and families with young children, the
people who really don't wish to walk around town trying to find a toilet they
can use.
"The money will mean that businesses such as
pubs and petrol stations can work with MCC to upgrade their facilities so they
can be used by anyone."
The initiative could see over 750 businesses
across Wales
taking part.
All local authorities in Wales have been
invited to participate in the scheme for three years from 1 April 2009. Local
authorities will have to monitor the scheme and report annually on how
effective it has been.
