Town Councillor's allowances

Dear Sir

I am writing in response to the letter printed in the Beacon dated 11th March 2009 concerning Councillor's allowances.

I must point out that Monmouth Town Councillors receive no payment for their work, but can claim limited expenses towards costs incurred in their council work. There has been a small amount put aside each year in the budget for Councillors expenses and for this current year the expenditure totals less than £600.00.

Many Councillors do not make any claim whatsoever for legitimate expenses such as telephone and petrol charges which they are entitled to do so.

Town and Community Councillors give their time freely in the service of their communities and receive no monies in the form of personal allowances.

I hope that this clarifies the situation.

Yours faithfully,

Sarah Robson

Town Clerk.
