Monmouth
Golf Club Seniors Away-Day
by Mike Phillips MGC
Seniors Captain
The Seniors Section at Monmouth Golf Club went on their annual away day on the 25th June 2009 to Burghill Valley Golf Club, North Herefordshire.
The day was organised by the Seniors Captain Mike Phillips together with Senior's Secretary Bill Stace and 44 members travelled to Burgh Hill to take part in the competition. They all arrived by 11.30 and,
after coffee and a bacon bap, numbered balls supplied by Brian Powell were drawn out of a bag to denote playing partners and starting order.
Burghill Valley was in fine condition, set amongst the apple trees with panoramic views of Herefordshire, although the sounds
of gun shots and of helicopters landing from the nearby SAS Camp provided an excuse for those who
were not in form. In truth the only real problem that our group had was getting used to the speed of the greens.
The weather was perfect and after an enjoyable day on the course we all sat down to a fine dinner of Roast Herefordshire Beef followed by a tasty dessert and coffee with mints.
After calculating the scores the prize winners were:-
4th Prize David Backhouse
3rd Prize Terry Rogers
2nd Prize David
Crocker
Winner
of The Away- Day Trophy for 2009 and :1st Prize Andreas
Weinhardt
Mike Phillips the Captain then thanked everyone who was involved in the organisation with special mention for Bill Stace, Maurice Brain (Chairman of Greens)who with his staff has made many improvements to the course at Monmouth and finally Chris Feakins who organises the Seniors play on Thursdays.
Several
members then stood up and told jokes before making their way home after a most enjoyable day.
