SCHOOL KIDS TAUGHT "CRUCIAL" LIFE LESSONS
"Crucial Crew" will be embarking on a two week campaign in Monmouthshire and Torfaen on Monday 22nd September 2008.
"Crucial Crew" is a multi-agency initiative. The aim of the event is to provide an enjoyable way of teaching pupils aged 10-12 years to:-
● Become more aware of personal safety
● Learn how to react to dangerous situations
● Make a contribution to crime prevention
● Avoid becoming victims of crime
● Know what role the emergency services play
● Foster good citizenship
All issues which form part of the National School Curriculum.
The initiative operates by inviting schools from across the region to participate in interactive workshops run by each of the agencies involved. Each agency has its own "station" and approximately 120 pupils (split into small groups) will visit each station over the course of a morning or afternoon session.
This year, the 9 ‘stations' will be manned by:
● Gwent Police (covering anti-social behaviour and alcohol abuse)
● Monmouthshire and Torfaen Countryside
● Capita Symonds Road Safety
● Western Power (electricity)
● Red Cross (dealing with emergency situations)
● Food Standards Agency (food preparation)
● Fire Service (fire hazards in the home)
● Construction (mock building site)
● Network Rail (Railway Safety)
PC Mark Lewis, Schools Liaison Officer and co-ordinator of the event said;
"This initiative has proved to be a very worthwhile way of engaging with young people in the area and through the activities run by the agencies involved it provides the opportunity for children from different schools to interact and work together.
"It's a chance for them to learn about everyday issues and aspects of personal safety that sometimes get overlooked."
This year the event will take place in Raglan Barracks, Newport.
