27 AMs call on
the Assembly to strengthen diabetes policies
Nearly half of Wales' AMs have supported a
statement calling on the Welsh Assembly Government to strengthen policies to
prevent, identify and help people manage diabetes.
Twenty seven AMs have subscribed to The
Statement of Opinion, tabled by Monmouth AM Nick Ramsay to mark World Diabetes
Day.
It calls on the Welsh Assembly Government to implement and strengthen its
policies for prevention, early
identification and management of diabetes and its complications.
It also praises Diabetes UK Cymru's work in raising
awareness about the condition.
Dai Williams, National Director of Diabetes UK
Cymru, said: "We are delighted Nick Ramsay AM tabled the statement to support
our work and call upon the Assembly and we are pleased so many AMs have
subscribed to it.
"Policies for early detection and help for
people with diabetes are vital to ensure they can manage the condition
successfully and reduce the risk of developing complications.
"Prevention of Type 2 diabetes is also crucial
to avoid the increasing tide of people diagnosed with the condition, including
6,300 people in Wales
in the last year alone."
