Monmouth Cricket Second Team - A MAIDEN club half-century

A MAIDEN club half-century from youngster Matthew Jones helped Monmouth Seconds to an emphatic 107-run home win over Feckenham Seconds in the Worcestershire County League.

Left-arm seam duo Dan Risk (4-47) and Richard Shaw (3-25) also starred for Monmouth Seconds who have climbed to third place in Division 2 2nd XI.

Last Saturday's comprehensive win was a fitting celebration for Monmouth's second-team scorer Trevor Slocombe whose birthday was marked with a cake and a team serenade.

Skipper Jon Despontin (27) and Gareth Hughes (14) provided the backbone of Monmouth's 199-6 from 50 overs on a good pitch at the Sports Ground.

Jones, who plays youth representative cricket for Wales, batted superbly for Monmouth after coming in at number three. He hit an unbeaten 61.

Martin Newell struck 34 in the closing stages, while vice-skipper Alim Hansraj contributed with 13.

Feckenham's former first-team skipper Pete Monk was the visitors' most successful bowler, bagging 3-46 from 16 overs.

In reply, Feckenham progressed to 29-0 before Monmouth's bowlers got down to work.

The Redditch club's reply suddenly plunged to 51-7 and then 68-9 before they were eventually skittled out for just 92 in the 31st over.

Risk claimed the prized scalp of Monk for six and Hansraj dismissed Feckenham skipper Paul Humphries, the ex-Herefordshire Minor Counties player, also for six.

Risk was very lively in his 11-over stint and in-form Shaw demonstrated his growing stature in his 9.1-over spell.

Hansraj finished with 2-2 from six overs and Newell bagged 1-13, while Despontin impressed behind the stumps, claiming two catches and a stumping.

Hughes and Jagdev Saran also took catches for the hosts and there were sound fielding displays from Tom Baker, Idris Leonard and late call-up Alex Fox.

Monmouth Seconds, sponsored by the Jewel Balti, picked up a maximum 24-point haul for the win.

The match balls were sponsored by tea-lady Bernice Slocombe and the Mayhill Hotel.

Monmouth Seconds face a tough challenge at the Sports Ground on Saturday when they host Worcester Dominies Seconds (1.30pm start).
