Monmouth Cricket Club - Second team report
A hard-hitting maiden century from Jordan Charles led
Monmouth Seconds to an emphatic 84-run win at Bromyard Seconds in the
Worcestershire County League.
Charles scored a superb 117 from just 99 balls to propel his
side to a formidable 286-6 from 50 overs at Flaggoners Green last Saturday.
Man-of-the-match Charles then snapped up 3-38 from eight
overs as Monmouth dismissed the north Herefordshire outfit for 202 in the 39th
over.
Eight of Bromyard's batsmen were clean bowled and Monmouth
picked up 24 points from the triumph to move up to fifth spot in the Division 2
2nd XI table.
Despite the efforts of Gareth Hughes (24) and Jag Saran
(14), Monmouth struggled to score runs quickly in the early stages and were
59-2 from 25 overs.
Charles, whose previous highest score was 63 not out,
immediately increased the visitors' run-rate.
The Swansea
University student cracked
15 fours and three sixes in his swash-buckling first-ever century.
Alim Hansraj (32 from 32 balls) and Fin Williams (30 from 19
balls) supported Charles, while Dan Risk (13 not out) and Richard Shaw (11 not
out) also weighed in.
Bromyard opener Chris Simmonds (77) led the hosts' reply but
Monmouth's bowlers soon got the upper-hand.
Risk bagged 3-34, Charles, 3-38 and Shaw (2-25) all shone
for Monmouth Seconds, sponsored by the Jewel Balti.
Martin Newell took 1-33 and vice-skipper Hansraj, 1-42,
before Monmouth sealed their victory after skittling out second-bottom Bromyard
in 38.3 overs.
The match balls were sponsored by John and Hazel Shaw and
Peter Ingram.
Monmouth Seconds entertain fourth-placed Feckenham
Seconds in the league on Saturday and then welcome Ross to the Sports Ground
next Tuesday (June 22) for a Twenty20 friendly.
