Monmouth Cricket Club - A POOR batting display sentenced Monmouth Seconds
A POOR batting display sentenced Monmouth Seconds to a
51-run home defeat to Alvechurch & Hopwood Seconds in the Worcestershire
County League Division 2.
Monmouth shone in the field last Saturday to restrict Alvechurch
to 171-9 from 50 overs in a 2nd XI Division 2 clash on an excellent
pitch at the Sports Groun
However, Monmouth's strong-looking top order failed, and
after plunging to 5-4, the hosts rallied to 120 before crashing to their first
defeat of the campaign.
Spinner Alim Hansraj (4-36 from 14.5 overs) was outstanding
for Monmouth on a day with several rain breaks.
Vice-skipper Hansraj was backed up by Andy Thomas (3-33 from
10) and James Taylor (1-35 from 10), while Adam Roberts (1-23) and Richard Shaw
also bowled well.
Hansraj held a smart catch off his own bowling and there
were other good catches from Tom Baker, Jon Despontin, newcomer Matthew
Jones, Roberts and Ian Morgan.
Monmouth will rue dropping Davies three times because the
opener struck 50. Reck top scored with 52 and the visitors' total was boosted
by 35 extras.
Monmouth Seconds, who are sponsored by Jewel Balti, made a
woeful start against excellent new-ball bowling from Batterly (4-45) and
crashed to 5-4 in the fifth over.
The injured Dave Wilding, who batted with the aid of a
runner, was run out before
Hansraj gave Monmouth hope with a quick-fire 37.
Thomas cracked an entertaining 31, while Baker weighed in
with a well-struck 18 and Shaw made 10 before Monmouth were dismissed for 120
in the 25th over.
The match balls were sponsored by Nigel Morris Cleaning Ltd
and Mike Hoddinott.
Meanwhile, Monmouth first team's scheduled match at
Alvechurch & Hopwood in Division 2 last Saturday was rained off on the
morning of the match.
