Monmouth Rotary Club 45th Annual Raft Race 5th September 2010
Monmouth Rotary Club is again organising the annual Raft Race on the
River Wye at Monmouth. It is the 45th annual Raft Race and this year
it takes place on Sunday 5th September.
The event starts at the Rowing Club in Monmouth at 12 Noon and finishes
6 miles downriver at Whitebrook.
Entrants build their own rafts to their own design. A team can have a
minimum of 4 or up to a maximum of 10 rafters.
Most entrants don't treat the event as a race but more of a fun
afternoon out on the river whilst generating money for charity.
The last Raft Race in 2009 was well supported with 57 rafts taking part,
and £12000 in sponsorship money was raised for St David's Foundation Hospice
Care. Monmouth Rotary Club will be supporting St David's again this year and it
is hoped to improve on that total.
The Crown at Whitebrook restaurant, near Monmouth,( http://www.crownatwhitebrook.co.uk
) which enters a team in the charity raft race each year, has been unveiled as
the first ever sponsors of the exhilarating River Wye event.
Race co-ordinator Norman Williams, of Monmouth Rotary
Club which organises the annual event, said: "We've never had a sponsor in the
past and the support from The Crown at Whitebrook will help us to reach another
level in our fund raising. We're extremely grateful to the very generous
support we have received from The Crown at Whitebrook which will go into
helping us to make the raft race even better this year. We're hoping to have
around 80 crafts on the water taking part in September."
A Festival has been organised at the Finish at Whitebrook from 13:00 to
17:00 including Traditional side shows, Refreshments, Live music, Locally
brewed "Raft Race Ale" and Hog roast. Everybody welcome.
